Networking and Mentoring

The concept of networking

The notion of networking was introduced by women in the corporate world who felt the need to share experiences with other women in a non-threatening environment. For many women, working alone in a masculine environment it is a daunting experience. Contact and advice from others in the same or similar situations can be very welcome.

Networking at CERN

At CERN there is interest in setting up one or more women's networks for both scientific and administrative staff. A first initiative has been undertaken in the Atlas collaboration. The purpose of a network would be to

  • provide information about issues concerning CERN women,
  • promote the full participation of women in the Organisation at all levels.

The concept of mentoring

Mentoring (or coaching) can be offered at many different levels, from the practical aspects of day-to-day matters for newcomers to the provision of motivation and inspiration to professionals with an emphasis on career guidance. Mentoring can happen naturally or it can be planned, be short or long term and apply equally to both men and women. The popularity of mentoring results in part from compelling testimonials by people who have themselves benefited from the positive influence of an older person who helped them endure academic or career crises.
